HOW EVENING PRIMROSE OIL WORKS
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is converted into dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) which reduces inflammation in our body. Low levels of GLA is found in women with premenstrual symptoms and supplementing with evening primrose oil may help to relieve it.
WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS
DGLA is associated with anti-inflammatory effects as they will be further metabolize into prostaglandins which promotes anti-inflammation and supplementation of GLA does increase the body’s level of DGLA [1]. Some women with pre-menstrual syndrome have elevated prolactin levels, and there is evidence that PGE1, derived from DGLA is able to attenuate the possible effects caused by abnormal prolactin levels [2,3].
